  • What licenses do I need to install a heat pump water heater?

A plumbing license is required to install a Quantum heat pump water heater.

  • Can a heat pump be installed indoors?

Our Domestic heat pump range is designed for outdoor installation. Proper ventilation assures the ability to draw ambient air for optimal performance in a stable environment. Please call our team for queries on commercial applications.

  • How long does it normally take to start up after the heat pump has been installed and turned on?

After installation, the Heat Pump can take 20-30 minutes to start up. Please allow time for the heating cycle to complete. Time will vary dependent on the ambient temperature. (Refer to the specification guide of your model).

  • How many can be manifolded at once?

Our Quantum Titan Commercial Range can be manifolded together in an equal flow manifold. The exact number of units will depend on specific system configurations and hot water demand. Consult Quantum’s technical guidelines for detailed recommendations or call our support team for further advice.

  • How far from the storage tank can the condenser box be installed?

In split systems, the condenser unit can generally be installed at a distance from the storage tank, typically up to 7-8 meters. Refer to Quantum’s installation manual.

  • How much space is required for installation?

Quantum heat pumps require adequate space around the unit for proper airflow and maintenance access. Specific clearance requirements depend on the model and should be followed as per Quantum’s guidelines. Please refer to the installation guide for details.

  • Can a timer be installed on a heat pump?

  • What maintenance does my heat pump need?

For optimal performance, Quantum heat pumps require regular maintenance, including:

Inspecting air inlet and outlet for debris and blockages. Professional servicing to check refrigerant levels, electrical components including sacrificial anodes, for system efficiency.

Checking the condensate drain and PTR valve regularly (see specific intervals below).

  • How often do I check my condensate drain?

Quantum recommends checking the condensate drain every 6 months to ensure it is free from blockages. Proper maintenance prevents water buildup and possible damage to the heat pump.

  • How much should my condensate be draining?

Condensate drainage varies based on humidity and system usage. Regular checks will help establish a normal drainage rate. Significant changes may indicate the need for servicing. Please call our service team for further advice.

  • How often should I check my PTR valve?

The PTR valve (Pressure Temperature Relief Valve) should be checked every 6 months to ensure there are no buildup or blockages. Proper maintenance prevents buildup and possible damage to the heat pump.

  • How much water should my PTR valve be releasing?

During routine checks, the PTR valve should release a small and clear amount of water. Continuous or excessive and discoloured discharge signals a possible issue, which should be inspected by a licenced professional.

  • How often should I check my sacrificial anode?

Inspect the sacrificial anode every 1-3 years. In areas with hard water, it may need to be checked annually, as hard water can speed up the corrosion process.

  • Can a heat pump be installed indoors?

Quantum heat pumps are primarily designed for outdoor installation, where airflow and ventilation are optimal. Indoor installations are not recommended due to potential ventilation and heat dissipation requirements, except in the case of installing a Quantum split unit.

  • What do I do when my heat pump is not heating the water?

Check that it’s connected to power and the circuit breaker is operational.
Ensure that the area around the unit is clear for airflow.
If the issue persists, contact Quantum’s service department for further assistance.

  • Will my heat pump work on my solar setup?

Yes, Quantum heat pumps are compatible with solar power setups. Integrating with solar allows the heat pump to operate on solar-generated electricity, enhancing efficiency and sustainability.

  • Does my heat pump need direct sunlight?

No, Quantum heat pumps do not require direct sunlight to operate. They utilise ambient air heat, making them effective even in shaded or overcast environments.

  • Can I turn off my heat pump when we go away for a period of time?

Yes, Quantum heat pumps can be turned off during extended absences to conserve energy. Upon returning, allow the system time to heat the water before use. Time will vary depending on the ambient temperature.

  • What temperature should my heat pump heat to?

In Australia, water heaters are typically set to a temperature range that ensures both comfort and safety. Hot water storage systems will heat water to 60°C  to prevent bacterial growth, specifically Legionella bacteria, which can thrive at lower temperatures. Australian regulations require storage tanks to heat water to at least 60°C.

Delivery temperature to taps is often reduced to around 50°C or lower at outlets (like taps and showers) for safety. This is to prevent scalding, especially in households with children or elderly individuals. Tempering valves are required to be installed by a licenced professional to reduce the temperature at the point of use while maintaining higher temperatures in storage.

In Australia, regulations for installing tempering valves on hot water systems are largely governed by the National Construction Code (NCC) and the Plumbing Code of Australia (PCA), which are applied uniformly across all states and territories. According to these regulations, tempering valves are generally required in all Australian states and territories when installing or replacing a hot water system in any setting that provides hot water to bathrooms or areas accessed by people.

  • Is the quality of water going to affect my heat pump?

Yes, water quality can impact Quantum heat pump performance. Hard water, in particular, may cause mineral buildup over time. Regular system maintenance and, if needed, water treatment can help mitigate this effect.

  • Who can install my heat pump?

Installation of Quantum heat pumps must be performed by a licensed plumbing professional, ensuring compliance with Australian standards. An electrical license is also required for the electrical work involved.

  • What do I do if there has been a power failure?

After a power outage, the heat pump should resume normal operation once power is restored. If it does not, check the power supply and settings or consult Quantum’s service team.
